CAUSE AND GOAL

This year, 2020, marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Milutin Milanković’s theory of climate change in his book in French entitled: THÉORIE MATHÉMATIQUE des PHENOMÈNES THERMIQUES PRODIUTS PAR LA RADIATION SOLAIRE (Mathematical theory of thermal phenomena caused by the Sun).  The book was written during Milutin Milanković’s internment in Budapest during the First World War.  His research in that period was supported by the Hungarian Academy of Science and the Central Meteorological Institute in Budapest.  The book was published in Paris in 1920 in collaboration with L’Ècole Polytechnique.

The goal this gathering, marking the 100th anniversary of the publication of Milanković’s theory, is to establish continuity between the two centuries: to synthesize the achievements of the previous 100 years (“what we found out, did and what lessons we learned based on Milutin Milanković’s pioneering work”) and to point out further directions of applied research and specific groups of activities to mitigate the negative effects of climate change and weather extremes in the next century.

PROGRAM DETAILS AND MANNER OF IMPLEMENTATION

Institutions and prominent individuals engaged in research related to Milanković’s theory will be included in preparation and realisation of the program of the jubilee. They are coming from Austria, where Milanković graduated and received his doctorate from the Technical University in Vienna, from Hungary, where the book was written, and France, where the book was published.
